HISTORY OF THE EAST GREENWICH MUNICIPAL BUILDING

In July of 2000, East Greenwich broke ground for their new municipal building. At this time most of the township's municipal services were housed at 21 East Cohawkin Road in Clarksboro, N.J. (and was formerly a schoolhouse).

In June of 2001, after years of design and deliberation, the new East Greenwich Municipal Building opened at 159 Democrat Road in Mickleton, N.J. Of the 18,434-square foot building, 3,719 square feet is leased by the Mickleton Post Office. The rest of the building includes the Police Department, Court Administration, and Township Administration.

Inside the front lobby are several plaques, including the dedication plaque of this municipal building in memory of John "Jack" F. Haegele.

The veteran's memorial flag pole was donated by the Anthony T. Calista VFW Post 5579 of Gibbstown, NJ.

Several residents, or their families donated funds to place granite benches, and to plant trees in honor of their veteran family members. Those wishing to inquire about adding new benches or trees, please contact George Popp.

A time capsule containing the names of all township veterans, living and deceased, was placed at the site.

A Memorial Committee had been formed earlier to plan this memorial, select the markers and forms of recognition.

Two older memorials that were formerly located at the East Greenwich Fire Company (veteran's memorial see above) and the older East Greenwich Municipal Building dedication sign [that building was rededicated as the Amos J. Peaslee Municipal Annex] (see below) are now located at the new East Greenwich Municipal Building, outside the building on the right side, and inside the building's main lobby, respectively.

HISTORY OF THE MICKLETON POST OFFICE

In the Fall of 1874, Samuel Mickle Ogden, grandson of Samuel Mickle, opened his General Store at the old Upper Greenwich Hall (later owned by the Mickleton Grange), at the corner of Kings Highway and Cedar Road.

On March 10, 1875, the Mickleton Post Office was established here (in a small room behind the building) with Samuel Mickle Ogden as Postmaster. That building was demolished in 1977. The bell from this building is now on display in front of the current East Greenwich Municipal building on Democrat Road.

In 1952, then Postmaster Edna Thompson's father, Ezra Held, built a 12x15 foot room adjacent to their family's living room to be used as a post office, and it was moved to her home at 519 Kings Highway. From 1952 to 1998 (for over 40 years), people in Mickleton needing post office services visited this house.

Following the Thompson home post office closure in 1998, the Mickleton Post office was housed in a van parked in front of the Haines Pork Shop, and then moved to a trailer on Democrat Road next to the Mione Hand Soap manufacturing Company while the new East Greenwich Municipal Building (and adjoining Post Office) was being built.
